1/22-1/23: Mississippi

Our time in Mississippi was shorter than planned because of our rearranging of Louisiana to see that one more museum. I think it worked out for the best though!

We entered into Mississippi in the rain. So. All of my memories of this state are dark, gloomy, and rainy. I see it with a foggy tint. ;) Our one stop was at Vicksburg National Military Park. The visitor center was informative, and the park rangers were great. We downloaded an app that would help us understand the layout of the battle. However, pretty quickly we all figured out that our brains are not designed to easily understand battle strategy... So, while we listened to a few of the stops, we did not complete all of them. When we got to the cemetery it was sadly too wet to explore. I was disappointed about that because that is the one place I usually can connect with the reality of a battle. Alyssa really wanted to get the stamp for our National Parks Passport at the visitor near the cemetery, but it was POURING by this time along with lightening and thunder. She insisted that it was what she wanted to do! So she did. ;) She ran all the way up in the pouring rain to get stamps in our book!!!

By that point none of us were fully interested in learning all of the details of the battle nor in wandering around in the rain, so we checked into our hotel and spent the night relaxing. Having my mom with us on the journey was so much fun, even when things didn't go as planned.
