10/4-10/5 Rhode Island

Because of our timeline, Rhode Island was a quick trip, but we filled it with as much as we could. Because of a Christmas gift from my (Nicole's) parents, we were able to stay in a bed and breakfast in Newport. It was an old house on the first street ever lit by gas lights!

We arrived around 7pm to check in, then we walked to go get food. The inn keeper had given us some suggestions. We found some of them, but when looking at the menu things were either expensive, un-interesting, or too many allergies. Around and around we wandered. After much walking and debating, we ended up eating...dun dun dun...Subway!!! Haha. Yup, that's right, in the beautiful city of Newport, Rhode Island, we ate a sandwich at Subway!!

Sleep felt so good that night! When we awoke we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast spread by the inn keeper. :)

Then we set off on our adventures again! First stop of the day was the Cliff Walk. It had gorgeous views of the ocean!! We even got to walk along some boulders at one point! It was really enjoyable.

We had the chance to go on an ocean view drive, but after all of our countless drives, we opted to just head north. Near Providence, we stopped at the Roger Williams National Historic Site. I had never heard of Roger Williams before, but was always up for learning history...and let's be honest collecting another cancelation for my national parks passport!! ;)
It was a small place, but we learned a lot nonetheless. Roger Williams sought complete separation for church and state. He believed that every person should be able to worship his own way, whatever that is. He was kicked out of Massachusetts and was going to be sent back to England, so he fled. When he came upon the location of current day Providence, he was taken care of by the native people and had the location to start again. He saw it as God's providence; thus, the town of Providence, Rhode Island was born. There were some more interesting facts, but I will keep it brief here for now!

With that, we left Rhode Island and headed over the border to Massachusetts!
